walking the walk
This might sound weird coming from a guy living in a two bedroom apartment but its time for me to downsize. I already mentioned that I’m looking for a new place to live and last Sunday I did a deeper dive into my budget as well as what I need out of a new place. The easy thing to do would be to just find the exact same space closer to the new office. By the way on Sundays I plan my week ahead as well as go over my goals and a bunch of other boring life related stuff to keep myself on track. Side note(crap, is that the same as by the way? I should really look shit like that up): I do this to make myself feel better about sequestering myself away from all human contact for a complete day…
One of my main personal initiatives this year is to become more financially healthy. I’m not destitute by any means but after the divorce I was starting over. from scratch. The reason for the financial goal is I would like to eventually like to buy a little plot of land where I can unfold a boxabl. For those not in the know this is a manufactured home that unfolds on site completely wired, plumbed, and ready to occupy. Power, water, and sewer (or septic field) need to be already there and ready to connect so a dilapidated farmhouse that I could bulldoze, burn, blow-up, could be perfect as well as fun.
I would start with the one and see how it goes. The beauty is that I could always order another and attach them like legos but it would be ideal if I could figure out how to fit my entire life into the first one.
I know it doesn’t look like much but something about that floor plan and all the crap I CAN’T fit in it calms me down. I don’t need a lot of stuff and this living situation would force me to prove that out. I will build a deck around 3 sides and probably include a mud room that could double as my storage closet. Clothes go in the room divider thing and under the bed but I would want a space to hang some stuff up.
There are some other available spaces like above the all-in-one washer dryer and it wouldn’t be hard to unfold it over a basement given the right lot configuration. I kind of like the basement idea because this is a manufactured home even if it doesnt have wheels and would make a tempting target for God’s Vaccuum during that time of year.
So I mentioned downsizing earlier. I did some thinking and my guest room has been occupied exactly 4 times in two years. With the approximately $350 dollars a month premium I pay for extra space it works out to a little over $2,000 per visit. For that kind of money I could just spend a couple hundred on a mattress topper and call the couch the spare bed. These extra rooms don’t make no sense.
Or, anyone who doesn’t mind the cranky but sometimes funny guy living on a small piece of their land…
I tell you all this because I have decided to move into a 1 bedroom apartment. the search continues this weekend but I am already happy about getting rid of a bedrooms worth of stuff. I might even ditch my California King bed. I am now willing to admit that I got taken for an internet marketing mattress ride. I got a Ghost Bed and if you really want to laugh at me look up what they cost. I did get a Black Friday special and interest free payments for a year but the thing has been bad since it showed up.
I am an enormous human but that bed is just dumb. Even if I entertain the occasional guest I don’t need that much real estate. It is uncomfortable, and I even had to file a warranty claim already as the first one failed. $100 later to cover shipping and this one is giving out on the edges as well. I’m looking forward to donating this big monster in favor of something more reasonable. The guest bed (a queen) will have to do until I live in a place I plan on staying for more than a year. I might even splurge and buy myself a big boy headboard…
Looks like I talked myself into that live as I wrote.
