spot of trouble
I had one of those weeks that felt like a month. Not because anything was bad but it was a week overflowing with stuff. I absolutely love this gig but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t kick the shit out of me from time to time. Pair that up with the still no drinking and Friday night probably found me crankier than normal.
My usual is to get home on a Friday and hopefully figure out someone to have a few cocktails with as I wind down from the week. I was the aforementioned exhausted and the gummy I took just wasn’t a satisfying substitute. So I stayed home and started some of my weekend rituals early with the hope of getting to sleep early with a little help from my friend THC. Best laid plans and all that I found myself curious about the ruckus happening outside of my door at 11:30pm.
The Dairy Queen tries to shut down around 10:30 but hot summer weekend nights and all it usually takes until 11 for things to clear out. That’s why last night was weird. By the time I got my happy ass into my viewing chair on the lanai there were two separate fights happening and some random child jackass was lobbing fireworks into different groups. The whole thing got my adrenaline up just a bit and it was fun to watch from across the street.
In all the chaos parents were picking up those too young to drive themselves and neighbors were all yelling mostly about the fireworks which didn’t seem smart for a lot of different reasons. Bottles began breaking and some really shitty insults were being thrown about. (is it weird that I wanted to ghost write some insults to help escalate the situation?) Then when the police showed up everyone scattered.
The cops were chasing two of the fighters as escapes were omnidirectional with three especially intelligent specimens starting up my stairs while looking back. I don’t have a picture of the initial exodus because I needed to be ready for my visitors but once I asked if I could help them they hauled ass back down and away. I thought they could easily see me due to the street light set on SUN but these were not specially aware young people. The police pretty much cleared out the place and it turned out that the house to my right of that parking lot was having a party which sparked the whole situation.
I found this out as the dad made three girls grab brooms and sweep up the broken glass in the street. He noticed me and tried to apologize but I waived him off. When I said “that one kind of got away from you didn’t it…” He just shook his head. I thanked him for the entertainment and went in to bed. I really am going to miss this place.
